On Being Kind
Kindness.
Since when did this concept become so rare?
Take a look at the current presidential elections, the comments on YouTube, or even within the confines of your own office. The overwhelming amount of selfish, entitled, downright mean comments that come out of otherwise civilized people is really starting to scare me.
Since when did giving “the finger” replace giving a compliment?
How long has it been cool to tear someone down with an insult rather than building them up with a friendship.
Who decided that the ruthless mentality of entitlement (as long as I get what I want, it doesn’t matter who I step on to get it) is more appropriate than selflessness and kindness.
I’ve been working in the customer service industry for years in one position or another. I’m amazed at how many customers approach employees with a “gotcha” attitude. They are always on the lookout for something free.
Hot coffee is now a chance to sue for millions of dollars. A spilled drink is an excuse for a free meal. A misspoken word is fodder for a smear campaign. Simple, human mistakes are now an opportunity for selfishness that all-too-often comes coupled with cruelty.
Nothing but perfection is tolerated.
I say it’s time for nice to be cool. It’s time for patience and understanding to make their mark. It’s time that compliments outweigh complaints.
As I think of my daily interactions, I’m committing myself to look for, and more readily point out the good that I see. I hope you join me.
Kindness is the new cool.
